Ti voglio servire, O Signore

On Wednesday evening, the church I attend had the distinct pleasure of welcoming (again) Pastor Andrea Ferrari to hear news from the beautiful land of Italy.
I’d like to share some of what we heard from this kind-hearted, strong and passionate Christian pioneer. And thus to hopefully invite your prayers and supplications to the Lord [...]

The Cross of Reconciliation

Once again I preached at Grace Community Bible Church. This time it was only an hour, but the chaos that ensued from trying to reconcile the three different outlines I ended up with made this sermon… not one of my better public speaking moments. Still, if you care, give it a listen.

For what it’s worth

I preached at Grace Community Bible Church today.

Live feed of the Calvinism debate

For those (like me) who are interested in the Caner/Caner/White/Ascol debate but find it impossible to make it to Lynchburg a week from Monday, Ergun Caner has announced a live feed on his website.
This was, I thought, of too much general interest to leave it in the asides. I’ll be watching. Sorry, Patrick, [...]

Links here or there

Instead of a bunch of asides today, I’m just going to put a few interesting links in this post.

Challies does a great post on how justice is demonstrated even in our fallen hearts, and how its demands were met even though Christ was completely undeserving of punishment.
Kim Riddlebarger discusses sending our kids to college, even [...]

Sound bite

I hope this bite is sound, anyway. Adapted from an email discussion I was having with Patrick:
If his own personal Reformation doesn’t lead him to loving the Bride instead of hating it, and if it doesn’t lead him to a sound, Biblical doctrine of the Trinity, then it hasn’t done anything for him.
You can [...]

James White’s favorites

Last night I received an email from Dr. White, with the following list of his favorites from our recent list of “Little known facts about James White” and some commentary of his own (in italics) that is as funny as anything posted:

Calvin didn’t burn Servetus. James White burned Servetus. With his laser pointer. [Ed. — [...]

Short notes

Dave’s back! Looking forward to the things he plans to write about.
We’ve been indirectly blogspotted by Phil Johnson for the “little known facts” post. For those keeping count, that’s two links by Pyros and one large set of comments by a Pyro. All that’s left is Pecadillo and we’ll have the whole [...]

Little known facts about James White

In the spirit of Chuck Norris Facts (and if this bothers you, start with comment #320 and then read it all):

When James White stutters in his Greek class, a new entry shows up in the next edition of BDAG.
James White can bench 300… 300 copies of the 38-volume Hendrickson Church Fathers set, that is.
Barringer Crater [...]

An aside on sabbatarianism

In yesterday’s post I said that I wasn’t a strict Sabbatarian, in that I believe that Romans 14, Colossians 2, and Hebrews 3 make the case against there being a one-to-one relationship between the Fourth Commandment in the Mosaic Covenant and whatever we are bound to obey in the last days (the period from Christ’s [...]

The right to a label

On a list I frequent, the topic that has come up (and all but died since) is whether a person can call themselves a “Reformed Baptist” if they don’t hold to the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession.
Generally speaking, the “Baptist” part of the label isn’t a big deal; one is a Baptist if one believes [...]

Excuses

I’m going to be too busy to update the site this weekend, but maybe Patrick will contribute some more. In any case, I want to leave you with this until next week, from my second favorite Arkansan Baptist:
And, of course, be with the Lord’s people on the Lord’s Day in the Lord’s house this [...]

Trading victory for a dare

This weekend while the kids were at Grandma’s, we watched a foreign film. We don’t get to do this too often anymore, because the kids have no patience for subtitles, and we have no patience for explaining what’s going on, especially in these avant-garde days of filmmaking. This movie was one that I [...]

The difference is faith

Todd Wilken interviewed Tim LaHaye on Issues Etc. yesterday (halfway through this one-hour MP3 and the entirety of this one-hour MP3), and I can’t recommend the program enough. Most of the program deals with the whole problem of the “Left Behind” eschatological view (premillennial dispensationalism, which is funny because ever since I’ve known it [...]

GCBC on FIRE

My church is now a member of FIRE (The Fellowship of Independent Reformed Evangelicals)! In fact, we’re the first church listed on the first link above, and we have no connection other than membership in FIRE with the other church, which is also called Grace Community Bible Church. How’s that for confusing?

Ergun-omics

Check out the PDF version of the email exchange between the Caner brothers and James White (based on the original here). Tracey did it.
Update:  it has been posted on AOMin’s site.

Oh, and one more thing…

Matt Winfrey said:
Many people think they would accept Christ as their Savior if only He would show Himself. But it is interesting to note that even when Christ raised someone from the dead, the Pharisees acknowledged this and only plotted all the more to kill Him.
I would only add what Christ Himself said before He [...]

Spread the word

Emir “elected because I selected” Caner and his brother Ergun are debating James White and Tom Ascol on the doctrines of grace.
God is glorified when His truth is proclaimed.
Spread the word.

Persevering

As I have mentioned recently, my church’s Wednesday night Bible studies are taken up with learning the Doctrines of Grace, mostly from an exegetical standpoint. This week we are wrapping up a discussion on the “P” in TULIP, usually described as “the Perseverance of the Saints.” I want to comment on this briefly [...]

Hard to watch

After reading this at Matt Gumm’s blog I had to Google around a bit and find out what was going on. The convergence is pretty big for me; I am a Reformed Baptist homeschooling person who has been on the wrong end of bad teaching and practice from church leadership. This link to [...]

2004 in Short Review

The last few years I have had a tradition of posting an end-of-year review of everything that has happened in our lives and ministries. This will not be as detailed as the reviews of previous years, but here we go:
Personal things:

My wife’s sister, the cancer patient who we said we were helping last year, [...]
