Salvation is of the Lord

From C.H. Spurgeon:
“Salvation is of the Lord.” — Jonah 2:9.
Salvation is the work of God. It is He alone who quickens the soul “dead in trespasses and sins,” and it is He also who maintains the soul in its spiritual life. He is both “Alpha and Omega.” “Salvation is of the Lord.” If I am [...]

Discerning discerners, endorsing endorsers

Wow. Justin Taylor announces Challies’ new book. People question his credentials. Steve Camp suggests that Tim is just looking for his fifteen minutes of fame. Justin blasts Steve. Frank Turk and Phil Johnson step in. Challies begins to respond. Challies’ pastor endorses the book (in apparent response to [...]

T4G ads. Very funny stuff. Loved the picture of Al Mohler.

Spirit and Scripture

I preached the first of two sermons leading up to Reformation Day today. It’s sort of a “we need a new Reformation, and it’s the same as the old Reformation” theme, but I wasn’t obvious about it, I don’t think.
It moves fast, and I would encourage people who care to look up the passages [...]

Poor man’s interpretation of 2 Tim 2:11-13

Let’s take a look at the following verses:
2 Timothy 2:11-13 Listen

11 The saying is trustworthy, for:

If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—

for he cannot deny himself. [...]

Thoughts on the Sabbath

Although they’re a couple of years old, I only recently noticed these two posts on Christians and the Sabbath by Jeremy Pierce. They’re well worth checking out. As far as I’m concerned, however, to be honest I simply don’t know enough to say whether I agree or disagree with what he’s saying. [...]

New poll: the limits of table fellowship

Check out the new poll on the sidebar, inspired by the Piper/Grudem + Dever + Storms and more controversy.

The presence of God

Last Sunday was the last of my three-part series on the Golden Calf. (Sorry, like I said, I’ve been busy.)

Grace for a wheeler-dealer

From D.A. Carson:
The name Bethel means “house of God.” I wonder how many churches, houses, Bible colleges and seminaries, Christian shelters, and other institutions have chosen this name to grace their signs and their letterheads.
Yet the event that gave rise to the name (Gen. 28) was a mixed bag. There is Jacob, scurrying across [...]

The holiness of God’s servant

I preached yesterday morning for the second of three weeks at Grace Community Bible Church, if you’re interested. Only 45 minutes, if you can believe that.

The parable of the sheep and goats

The following is the January 25th entry of D.A. Carson’s For the Love of God (vol. 1):
The parable of the sheep and the goats (Matt. 25:31-46) focuses attention on the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the sick, and those in prison. It speaks volumes to us in a culture where the poor, the wretched, and [...]

The self-deception of idolaters

Yesterday I started a three-week stint of pulpit supply at my church. The first sermon is up (and I think that overall I have improved a lot since last year, just so you know, but I’m still pretty far from where I want to be).

Why have You forsaken Me?

My introduction to the Lord’s Supper, this morning in church:
“Truly, this man was the Son of God!”
And yet, this man who was truly declared to be the Son of God, by the man charged with overseeing His death, was nailed to the cross for six hours when He called out to His Father with the [...]

No longer worth it

I have had to turn off mail delivery to myself from the Reformed Baptist Discussion List (RBDL). I just can’t personally read some of the things that are said there. Maybe someday I’ll be strong enough to read some of those things without actually sinning in my heart.
I understand why some people think [...]

For your consideration

David Charles has posted the five points of Reformed Baptist churches. No, these aren’t the five points of Calvinism, although they are subpoints under one of the headings there.
I’m hoping to comment on this further, later. But for the moment I am just linking to it now. For the record I will [...]

Shavuot

You like Hebraic Roots? Here’s the real thing.

Dear Reformed People (of whom I am one)

Dear Reformed People, particularly you who, like me, often think that you have a commission in the Reformation Police… go read this right now.
If it applies to you, repent. That’s what I’m doing.

For the record

I don’t care what your Reformed bona-fides are. If you claim to be Reformed, yet send me email to explain to me that Constantine manipulated the Nicene Council to inaugurate Christmas, or you send me anything that links favorably to either The Two Babylons or the retracted tract Babylon Mystery Religion, I will unsubscribe [...]

If Adam then Christ

From Paul in Romans:
Romans 5:12-21 Listen

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned [...]

Addition is what exactly?

Here’s something I’d like to throw out for discussion (with due trepidation, remember past discussions):
What does this verse mean?
Deuteronomy 12:32

32  [1] “Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it. (ESV)

Footnotes
[1] 12:32 Ch 13:1 in Hebrew

Does this mean:

Do not add to God’s commandment, [...]
