UniBible

This looks cool: a Palm-based Unicode Bible program with Hebrew and Greek. I almost wish I had a Palm Pilot again. (Actually, I guess it’s more than “almost.”)

A couple of thoughts on the TNIV, translation, etc.

Not that I have a leg to stand on in agreeing or disagreeing (especially since I have zero knowledge of biblical Hebrew and Greek), but I agree with Ian who agrees with Craig Blomberg!
In addition, I thought I’d mention a few more resources I’ve read which I’ve found informative on the topic: Blomberg’s “TNIV: The [...]

What God Has Always Wanted

If you don’t already own it, I highly recommend purchasing What God Has Always Wanted: The Bible’s Big Idea from Genesis through Revelation by Charles Boyd and illustrated by Dennas Davis. Especially if you have kids or are a Sunday school teacher. Or if you play a similar or related role in children’s lives. It’s [...]

The woman at the well

Mad props to the ‘propriate peeps for such a powerful presentation (which is also available on YouTube):

Be sure to check out more videos from Student Life (e.g. How Does He Love Us?, His Grace, and for some lighthearted physical comedy, Failing Love: Cupid). There are loads of (mostly) good videos to go through.

What’s love got to do with it?

Love’s got everything to do with being a true Christian.
1 Cor. 13:3 reads:
If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned [καυθήσομαι], but have not love, I gain nothing.
Alternatively, according to the ESV’s footnote, it could read:
If I give away all I have, and if I deliver [...]

“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?”

Sinclair Ferguson, one of my favorite modern Christian authors, comments on Psalm 51:
In asking for “mercy,” David, you are asking that God will show it to you, but withdraw it from Jesus.
In asking to experience God’s “unfailing love,” you are asking that Jesus will feel it has been removed.
In asking to taste God’s “great compassion,” [...]

These are a few of my favorite quotes

For your Maker is your husband,
the Lord of hosts is his name.
(Isaiah 54:5)
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:23)
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge [...]

A children’s lesson in textual criticism

I was caught off guard yesterday and found that I needed to prepare the kids’ lesson for our Wednesday night bible study. I came up with something that seemed to be helpful, and I thought I’d share it.
I cut out 32 pieces of paper, each about 3 inches by 3 inches. On one [...]

No rest for the wicked

Next in Hebrews 3 we come to a section which implores us to enter into our rest. Strangely, I have seen a few commentators take the result of this argument in Heb. 4:9 and claim that this passage supports the ongoing requirement of Christians to keep the Sabbath (in some sense that includes resting [...]

Can’t get away from Him

I was reading Hebrews 3 this morning, and came across this:
Hebrews 3:1-6 Listen

3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted [...]

Bible meme

I just saw this over at Jeremy Pierce’s weblog. I hope he doesn’t mind if I crash the party.
1. What translation of the Bible do you like best?
I like the ESV best, the NASB(95) as a close second, and the TNIV third.
2. Old or New Testament?
God forbid I’m a closet heretical Marcionite (although that [...]

Fast Apologetics

James White put a short (3-3/4 minute) but powerful presentation up on YouTube. He shares three commonly misused verses, one each by Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Oneness Pentecostals and how those Scriptures should be properly understood. Yet another awesome resource from Dr. White.

Bad press

This was a bit surprising. I was directed to this interview about the Holman Christian Standard Bible, which I had been given to understand was just another one of the recent, really good translations (alongside ESV and NASB95). But this interview is making me reconsider.
Problems:

Dr. Blum’s very first response, starting with “Well, the [...]
