Making melody

Matt again, on corporate worship: “A beautiful performance is not the primary goal, but rather a time of unified congregational worship.” Read the whole thing (it’s short).

    I can’t seem to comment there, so I’ll comment here. :-)

    I largely agree, but I always took it as a responsibility of the sound tech to find melody among the group on stage and make sure it was sufficiently prominent. Of course when nobody is singing the melody, or it’s being carried only by a choir, it become tricky.

    Agreed, but even then people expect the person out in front to be carrying the tune. I remember in the old days having to patiently explain to somebody that the reason she couldn’t hear Tom, even though he was in “front” (as close as you could get given the circular stage, anyway) was because Mary was leading and carrying the melody, so I had him turned down so low that you could just barely make him out. I think it was taken as a personal affront by the listener.
