I was reading Hebrews 3 this morning, and came across this:
Hebrews 3:1-6 Listen3:1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. (ESV)
This passage is comparing Jesus and Moses as the arbitrater of different covenants, but it has a time bomb lurking within. So, let’s follow the meaning and spot the bomb, shall we?
- Jesus was faithful to him [God] who appointed him [Jesus].
- Moses was also faithful, in “all God’s house.”
- Therefore the house in which Moses served was God’s house.
- Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house is worthy of more glory than a house.
- Therefore Jesus’ relationship with Moses regarding the “house” is that of a builder to a servant of the house.
- Every house is built by someone.
- The builder of all things is God.
- Moses was a faithful servant in God’s house [confirming his stance in the house earlier].
- If the house is God’s house, and if Jesus is the builder of the house, and if God builds all things (nobody else is listed here as building houses), then Jesus is God for the purposes of this housebuilding analogy.
- Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son.
