Bible meme

I just saw this over at Jeremy Pierce’s weblog. I hope he doesn’t mind if I crash the party.

1. What translation of the Bible do you like best?

I like the ESV best, the NASB(95) as a close second, and the TNIV third.

2. Old or New Testament?

God forbid I’m a closet heretical Marcionite (although that might be cool to be a Martian)! Since I’m pressed for a choice, I’ll pick the NT. Christ revealed (vs. Christ concealed) in all his glory.

3. Favorite Book of the Bible?

OT: Genesis
NT: John

If I could add others: Genesis, Job, the Psalms, and Isaiah for the OT; and John, Luke-Acts, Romans, Philippians, and Hebrews for the NT.

4. Favorite Chapter?

Probably Isaiah 54. But currently Lamentations 3, Romans 8, 2 Corinthians 4, and Philippians 3 as well.

5. Favorite Verse?

Both Isaiah 54:5 and Romans 6:23.

6. Bible character you think you’re most like?

Balaam’s donkey? Just kidding. Maybe Luke.

7. One thing from the Bible that confuses you?

So this is something about the Bible rather than something from the Bible. But I wonder why these days more Bibles aren’t printed in single column, paragraph format like most ordinary books.

8. Moses or Paul?

Paul.

9. A teaching from the Bible that you struggle with or don’t get?

Whether, and if so how, the Sabbath is applicable to Christians today.

10. Coolest name in the Bible?

I’ve always liked the sound of the name “Eliezer” for some reason.

    1. I like ESV best for the Old Testament, and generally the NASB95 for the New.
    2. NT, same reason as Patrick.
    3. Hebrews, bar none, hands down. After that, John and Romans are duking it out.
    4. Ooh. John 6 is good. So is Romans 8.
    5. Col. 3:3 is a favorite. So is Hebrews 1:1-2a.
    6. I feel a lot of similarities with Jonah. I think that my decision-making process is a lot like Joab’s, too. Neither is reassuring.
    7. The imagery in Revelation is hard to slog through sometimes.
    8. I can’t believe this is a question. It’s tempting to come up with some holy-sounding reason why Moses is better, but I just can’t.
    9. Love and forgiveness vs. imprecatory psalms and “remember” commands.
    10. Hey, Eliezer is my name in #pros! I think Ploni Almoni (”a certain man” in Ruth) is funny, but it’s not really a name, is it?
