Stairs

Went out my back door on Monday, to climb into the car and go to work.

Didn’t realize there was even ice on the ground, much less ice on the steps.

Took my first step on the concrete back steps. Total wipeout: both feet went out from under me. Flailed like a madman to grab something, but I couldn’t reach anything. Landed hard on my tailbone, all 200+ pounds of me, with 20 pounds of gear I carry around (tools, laptop, Neo, can of ginger ale, etc.). Then slid down each stair with the forward momentum. Thump, thump, thump, goosh. Landed in the mud at the bottom, one leg under me, one leg splayed out, top half of my body twisted around to try to grab something. All clothes torn and muddy.

I couldn’t breathe; I hit hard and I think the weird contortions I was doing made it worse. Pulled muscles in my chest, back, and neck. I had to work pretty hard to free up enough to shout for help. Tried to get up and nearly threw up; loads of pain coming from the tailbone.

Two days later, I’m finally back at work, after reconfiguring my workspace to be able to stand and work at the computer. I can’t sit in these chairs. I didn’t sleep the first night; the second night I only woke up two or three times, shifted to stop the pain, went back to sleep again. The worst part was the drive to work. I’m running so late that I thought I’d better drive rather than wait for public transportation, but I ended up sitting in the car for an hour and a half in traffic, and that took it out of me. It was over five minutes to walk fifty yards across the parking lot to get into the building.

Anyway, I’m here now, and even though I hurt, psychologically I’m in much better shape. I don’t like sitting around at home when I should be at work, although being with my family is nice. But the nagging “I have things to do” voice ends up pushing me along.

Anyway, prayers would be appreciated.

Ouch! Do you think you could have broken your tailbone? If that’s the source of the pain try sitting on one of those cheap rubber swim rings ($0.88 at Walmart). Hope you feel better soon, I can just imagine how much that would hurt.

I think (but I don’t know) that I’d be in much worse pain if I’d actually broken my tailbone. I almost certainly bruised it, though.

It’s funny, but the sitting itself isn’t so bad; it’s the stiffness once I’ve stayed in one position for any length of time that kills me.

I am sorry that you fell. :( But praise God that your injuries were not worse. I am praying for your quick recovery. How long were you on the ground until Tracey came to help you?

I don’t know. Five minutes, maybe? It’s all a sort of blur.

    I’ll abstain from quoting, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” :)

Seriously, though, hope you get better soon. I know that Amber has had some tailbone trouble after Cora was born and it wasn’t great for her, either.

Hope you are feeling better Charlie ! I have done the exact same thing many years ago, in the 1980’s…and knocked the wind out of myself !!! Broke my tailbone too !

I still check in to read your blog…I enjoy reading it. Lots of FFT (food for thought.)

I will remember you in prayers.
