Wonderful

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (ESV)

Footnotes

[1] 9:6 Or is upon

[2] 9:6 Or is called

Sorry about the MIDI file, if I could find a public domain version of a proper choral recording of this bit I would have included that instead. This is one of my three favorite parts of Handel’s Messiah (the other two being “Chorus: Hallelujah” and “Aria: the trumpet shall sound”).

Find the rest of the oratorio here.

    Mmm, that is beautiful! :-)

    BTW, I’d like to buy Handel’s Messiah on CD (as well as some Bach…). Do you have any recommendation as far as which Handel’s Messiah CD might be good to buy?

    Nikolaus Harnoncourt has a really good one, from a purist who tries to do it the way Handel would have done it. Here’s the Amazon link. Apparently people these days are more accustomed to something that sounds like this. I wasn’t aware of the war when I got this for my birthday a year or two ago, but having heard both at some point, I got more out of Harnoncourt.

    From Amazon’s page, here’s a link to listen to this part via Windows Media.

    Cool, thanks Charlie! Comparing some of the Amazon samples, I think I do like the one you have better. :-)

    Hi Patrick, I also love Handel’s Messiah and I own a copy of the one conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. I don’t know which version out there is the best (Charlie probably knows better than me on that) since I’ve not tried too many different CD’s, but here is the one I own, and you can hear audio samples when you click on the link. I’m pretty happy with mine. There’s also another one by Gardiner that I just found here.

    Cool, thanks Jessica! :-) Much appreciated. Maybe I’ll have to check out a few of these at a listening station or something before purchasing one.
