Mariolatry in chess

Thought this was interesting: I was listening to Prof. Michael Haykin teaching on the history of the church in the Middle Ages. Midway through the lecture, he mentioned that there’s apparently some connection between the rise of Mariolatry in Medieval Europe and the expanded powers of the queen piece in chess. The queen piece apparently started out without much power and in fact was originally known as the king’s counselor. If anyone has more info on the topic, I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

I’ll try to track some down for you. May take a little while, though.
